When to Start? What to Do?

With children’s dentistry it is very important to understand when you should start bringing the child in to the dentist, and what can be done at home to help maintain healthy teeth. When to start bringing in the child is simple, once the first tooth is in, then bring them in to By The Lake Dental. Maintaining healthy teeth for children is similar to that of adults. In short, once they have teeth, they should be brushing twice a day, and flossing once the teeth are close together (typically age 2-6) although they will need your assistance while they are learning to do this, and gaining their coordination. It is also very important to minimalize sugary food and drinks, and always rinsing the mouth out after these are consumed.

Here at By The Lake Dental we care about your child’s comfort, as well as their dental health and we have practices in place that prioritize both of these.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

One of the products we use for children is called Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). SDF is a better alternative to cavity treatment, where it is applied to the tooth to stop decay in its place. It will then turn the cavity area black, not the healthy tooth area. This typically requires 1-3 sessions which occur roughly once a month before the cavity is turned into hard tissue and can be filled to cover up the black area. This is a better alternative than drilling into the tooth for a child, as it is less intimidating, cheaper, relives sensitivity and is comfortable for the child.

Nitrous Oxide

Another key product we use here is Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas” which makes dental procedures much easier for children because of 4 main reasons. First, Nitrous Oxide reduces the discomfort felt by children, making it a much more comfortable experience for them. Secondly, it helps reduce anxiety, meaning the children will be much less scared, and care less about the dental procedures that they will be having. Nitrous Oxide also helps because it reduces memory during the time it is being inhaled, meaning the children won’t remember the specifics of what procedures happened during their appointment, helping with their peace of mind. Finally, Nitrous Oxide causes time to feel like it is going faster than it really is, meaning the child will feel like they were there for 2 minutes when they were actually there for 30 minutes.

Phase 1 Orthodontics

Phase 1 is pre-braces preparation for kids, as their adult teeth start to grow in. This helps make the braces or Invisalign® process more efficient and effective for your child. Phase 1 Orthodontics typically occurs between ages 6-10 as the permanent adult teeth are not fully grown in, and we are able to help correct problems, before they are irreversible with only 2nd phase (Braces or Invisalign®) treatment. Ask us for a free consultation on your next visit to see if Phase 1 Treatment may be right for your child.

Fluoride Treatments

As with adults, regular cleaning followed by a Fluoride varnish is important to helping prevent tooth decay, and rebuilding the tooth enamel which helps to do this. When a fluoride varnish or mouthwash is used, it is important to let it set on the teeth, meaning you should not eat, drink or rinse for at least 30 minutes after the treatment.
