Celebrate Pink Shirt Day with By The Lake Dental!
Bullying is a serious issue, and dentistry can play a crucial role in combating it.
In celebration of Pink Shirt Day, we would like to invite you to join us in supporting this cause! Visit one of our locations between February 21st and 25th and take your picture "wearing" our pink shirt. This serves as a reminder that small acts of kindness can have a significant impact, and that by working together, we can create a better and more compassionate world for everyone.
According to a study published in the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics, children's teeth are the most commonly targeted physical feature in bullying, followed by their strength and weight.
A bullied child may also develop some oral health problems, such as:
Avoidance of Dental Care: Bullying can have emotional impacts, such as anxiety and depression, which may cause a person to neglect their oral health. For example, someone who is being bullied may be so preoccupied with their emotional distress that they neglect to brush and floss regularly, leading to cavities and gum disease.
Bruxism: Bullying can cause stress and anxiety, which may lead to bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching). It can cause tooth wear, chips, fractures, and even loose teeth, which can require dental treatment.
As a community dental office, By The Lake Dental has served families for many years and we have heard heartbreaking stories of children being bullied due to their teeth. This has had a negative impact on their self-esteem, confidence, socialization, academic performance, and even their professional life, years later.
The team at By The Lake Dental, along with many others dental professionals, is committed to fighting bullying and promoting kindness and inclusion. We believe that everyone, regardless of their race, gender, appearance or abilities, has the right to grow up in a safe and inclusive environment. We believe that a smile reflects great self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall well-being, and there is nothing more meaningful than a child's happy and confident smile!
