The Effects of Vaping on Your Oral Health
A study carried out by NYU college of dentistry shows how vaping can impact oral health. The study divided the participants into 3 groups: people who smoke cigarettes, people who vape, and people who do not smoke. All the participants had already had some form of gum disease and after 6 months, signs began to indicate that the gum disease was getting worse in certain groups, particularly vape users.
The research team analyzed the oral health of 84 adults, comprising cigarette smokers, e-cigarette users, and nonsmokers. After six months, the team observed that gum disease had worsened in some participants in each group, including several e-cigarette users. Clinical attachment loss, which is a key indicator of gum disease, was significantly worse only in e-cigarette smokers compared to nonsmokers and cigarette smokers.
The researchers also analyzed the bacteria found in the plaque samples and discovered that e-cigarette users have a different oral microbiome from smokers and nonsmokers. While all groups shared roughly a fifth of the types of bacteria, several types of bacteria known to be associated with gum disease were particularly dominant in the mouths of e-cigarette users. The team also found that vaping elicits altered immune responses, exacerbating gum disease by making people prone to inflammation and infection.
In conclusion, e-cigarette use presents its own challenge to oral health as it promotes a unique microbiome that contributes to gum disease, alters immune responses, and worsens oral health over time. The research findings highlight the need for more extensive studies to understand the health consequences of e-cigarette use fully.
Vaping and smoking can be related to several diseases and can affect your oral and overall health. Take care of yourself by quitting smoking and vaping.
Finally, don´t forget to brush and floss daily, and remember to book your regular hygiene appointment every 4-6 months.
